HarpWeek Commentary:
In July the Democratic Convention refused to re-nominate Andrew Johnson for
President. Thomas Nast showed that the outgoing president had no
political "horse" to ride by depicting the Democratic and
Republican parties as broken hobbyhorses lying on the ground.
The cartoonist emphasized the equestrian metaphor with an appropriate
quote from Shakespeare's Richard III. |
