HarpWeek Commentary:
This unsigned cartoon by Thomas Nast refers to Cardinal Wolseys soliloquy in
Shakespeares "King Henry the VIII" (Act III, Scene 2). Note the Dead Duck on Johnsons medallion. Nast
used that as a symbol for Johnson after Johnson used the term to describe John W. Forney,
a Philadelphia newspaper publisher he detested. |
